Stories: One of the biggest arguments that Bill and I ever had, in our 6 year relationship, was if Chuck Woolery performed as well at his job, as Johnny Carson. I was on the side of Woolery! It was an all-night argument. I have a million memories of Bill, and his unique personality.
Bill and I never celebrated holidays, by mutual agreement: not birthdays, Valentine's Day, or Christmas/Hannukah. The only time we acknowledged our birthdays, was when he had a tee shirt custom made for me, that said: "It's not the heat, it's the humidity." That was the kind of person Bill was- it was a phrase we both used over and over, so he thought I'd walk around wearing it!
Bill had to see a dermatologist in Phila, but kept cancelling and rescheduling. He didnt like driving over suspension bridges and he didnt like going to the dr. When he finally showed up for his appt, the entire staff gave him a standing ovation!
Bill was very involved in defending Anita Hill against the attacks on her by... the Judiciary Committee (?). He taught me a lot, and I credit him in large part for turning me into a feminist -- though I don't think that was his intention! He also turned me onto The Donahue Show, and I learned a lot from watching that with him, as well. We had so many laughs at his spot-on imitations of the crucial characters in current events. Oh, and he turned me on to WC Fields movies, and the inimitable movies of David Mamet, which had a lifelong effect on me.
Anytime I was with Bill in public, women and men would tell me how handsome he was. But Bill didn't see it. He just saw his thinning hair and was self conscious about his nose. But he was always able to joke about it.
Working at the casino was a challenge for Bill's intellectual mind -- very frustrating. He used to say he did nothing at work but sit around til someone needed a light bulb changed. I know he then got his real estate license, and possibly his Black Seal license, so I'm not sure what kind of work he did after that.
Bill would go running, every morning, no matter what the weather. It was impressive. (It made me miserable because he would bounce on the bed as he was getting dressed, which always woke me up.) Then he would come home and make me coffee. He was the healthiest person I knew- except for his smoking.
Bill used to say to me, "You shouldn't be with me, I'm damaged goods!" I didn't really know what that meant, but I know that he sincerely felt that way.
I am glad I got to experience 6 yrs of closeness with Bill before there were cell phones, texting, emailing and social media. What a loss, that would have been. Timing can be everything.

Even in this photo of a young Bill, you can see that Bill had an old soul.... always a lot of very deep, sometimes painful, things going on in his mind, his soul. We used to say that one of us had to be awake at all times -- we would take turns -- "to watch over and worry about the world. " He used to describe himself, jokingly, as "165 lbs of raw terror." I do hope you are finally at peace, Bill.

My wife, daughter and I would like to send our deepest condolences to Bill's family. Bill was a great friend, well read, intelligent, great to talk with and he was always a lot of fun to be around. Bill loved his family and would tell us funny stories of his youth, about his family and especially of how proud he was of his children. We are very sad, and Bill is deeply missed. May his rest be peaceful, and he is met with his heavenly family and friends.

Some of my best memories as a young boy are the times spent at the Porch family gatherings, and that’s where I got know Bill. One of my fondest memories is a big backyard football game with lots of laughter and fun, and it’s at gatherings like these with Bill that I learned to treasure time with family and friends. Our condolences to the entire Porch family.

My condolences to William Porch's family. I have been Bill's friend for over 21 years and his roommate for 5 years. We both shared a love for music especially Jazz. We would talk for hours about music and sometimes football. We were both Eagles fans. I will miss my friend dearly.

Hi Dana,
Bill had been my boyfriend for 6 yrs. That was about 25 yrs ago. We lived near each other in Ventnor, then Atlantic City, Margate, etc. I was just Googling his name and was so surprised to read of his passing. As I see no mention of a memorial service, I would love to share memories of Bill, and honor him in some way.
