Joseph R. Basile, 89, of Hammonton passed away on Thursday at his residence. Born in Hammonton he was a lifelong resident there. He was a retired rural carrier for the Hammonton Post Office. Mr. Basile was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II. During the invasion of Okinawa, while assigned to the Royal Navy he was wounded while aboard the HMS Indefatigable CV-7. He was a member of the VFW Post 1026 in Hammonton; he was a charter member of the Hammonton Police Reserve and he was dispatcher for the Hammonton Police Department, retiring after 45 years of service. Mr. Basile was a longtime manager with the Hammonton Little League. He was a charter member and former secretary of the Hammonton Hawks Association, and he was a former assistant coach for the varsity and junior varsity squads. He was also a member of the Atlantic County Chapter of the NJ Football Officials Association. Mr. Basile was predeceased by his wife of 64 years: Louise A. Basile. He is survived by his son: Joseph R. Basile, Jr and his wife Carol of Shamong; three grandchildren: Sarah Basile, Seth Basile and his wife Vernae; Sean Basile; one sister in law: Sarah Bertino of Hammonton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday 11:00am in St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish at St. Martin de Porres RC Church, 129 Park Ave., Hammonton. Burial will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. A viewing will be held Tuesday 9:00am until 10:30am at the Carnesale Funeral home, 202 S. Third St., Hammonton.
