Obituary of Gladys Thomas

Gladys Davis Thomas was born Gladys Avant on October 5th 1935 in Fork, SC to the late McDuffie Avant and Ozzie Lee Leonard. She was preceded in death by her 3 siblings, Robert Avant, McDuffie Avant, and Emily Pittman. At the age of 17 she married the late Chapel Davis on October 14th 1952 which blessed them with 10 children: Marion Ross, Chapel Davis Jr., Roosevelt Davis, Leslie B. Sokolosky, Charles Lee Davis, Jerome Davis, Izella Davis, Tyrone Davis and the late Deborah and Justine Davis. On February 9th 1980 she remarried to Richard Thomas. Gladys loved people and loved caring for others. She dedicated 30 years to caring for the family of Dr. Sheldon Bernick, and considered them family. She also performed private duty care to those in need until she was unable to do so. Gladys enjoyed serving her creator, Jehovah God, and dedicated her life in baptism on May 26th 1965. She served faithfully for 51 years and enjoyed telling friends and family about the wonderful blessings of the Kingdom. Gladys also enjoyed attending the West Philadelphia senior citizen community center and took pleasure in sewing and making pottery for her and family. Her talented creations remain today with a multitude of family members. She will be missed by her surviving children, her nieces and nephews, a host of grand and great grand children, and her spiritual brothers and sisters from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Services will be held Saturday, February 18, 2017, 3:00pm at the Newfield Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, 611 Columbia Ave. Newfield, NJ 08344. Memorial Donations in Gladys name may be made to the Kingdom Hall.
