Obituary of The Honorable Allen J. Littlefield
Please share a memory of The Honorable Allen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The Honorable Allen J. Littlefield, Judge of the New Jersey Superior Court, departed this world unexpectedly, far too early, at the age of 48, on Wednesday, October 14th, while attending judicial training classes in Newark, NJ. Judge Littlefield leaves behind family, friends and colleagues, and most importantly, his wife and partner in life, Karen and their two sons, Matthew and Michael, all of whom will miss him dearly.
AJ was a big man, with a heart and intellect to match, who touched many lives during his career. His love of the law was exceeded only by the love of his family.
Judge Littlefield was appointed to the Superior Court by Governor Christie in July 2011, and assigned to the Civil Division that month and then transferred to the Criminal Division in September of this year.
Born in Hammonton, Judge Littlefield lived there all of his life. He was a graduate of Hammonton High School Class of 1985, and from Richard Stockton State College in 1989. Judge Littlefield obtained his Juris Doctor from Hofstra University School of Law in 1993, and was admitted to the Bar Associations of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. He was a member of the Atlantic and Camden County Bar Associations.
After his family, Allen's passion was as an advocate of the law. He won many jury verdicts for his clients and shared his broad knowledge of the law by teaching seminars and training classes.
Prior to his appointment to the Bench, AJ was a founding Partner of Fishman, Littlefield and Fishman. From 1998 thru 2010, Judge Littlefield served in many positions: as the solicitor for the Zoning and Planning Boards, Public Defender, Conflict Solicitor and Asst. Prosecutors for the Town of Hammonton, Borough of Folsom and Mullica Township. He also served as Lead Legal Counsel to the Atlantic County Republican Committee from 2006 thru 2010, and served on Governor Chris Christie's Gaming, Sports and Entertainment transition sub-committee.
AJ was an outstanding lawyer and Judge, and a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. AJ was predeceased by his grandparents, Mamie and Domenick Aristeo, and Lance and Grace Littlefield, and by his aunt Lucy Rodi.
AJ is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Karen ( nee Dougherty), his beautiful sons, Matthew and Michael; his parents, Allen and Joyce Littlefield; his sister Andrea Marino and her husband Bob; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thomas and Carmella (nee Midili) Dougherty; his sister in law; Colleen Fulco and her husband Richie; his brothers-in-law, Thomas Dougherty (Marcy), and Kevin Dougherty; his nieces and nephews, David, Alyssa, Austin, Rachael, Chloe and Connor; and his buddy Kitty.
Finally, the Judge leaves behind his “judicial family” the staff and Judges of Vicinage One (Atlantic and Cape May Counties). Judge Littlefield’s departure leaves a gaping hole in Vicinage One. AJ also sadly leaves behind numerous lifelong close friends who he enjoyed spending time and who will miss him dearly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday October 19, 2015, 11:00am in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Parish Church of St. Joseph's, 226 French St., Hammonton, where visitations will be held on Sunday from 4:00pm until 8:00pm and again on Monday from 9:30am until 11:00am. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Hammonton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in AJ’s name to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia c/o CHOP Foundation PO Box 781352, Philadelphia, PA 19178-1352.
