Obituary of John H. Stewart

John(Jack) H. Stewart passed away peacefully on Sept.11,2014 at Monmouth Medical Center after a brief illness with his family by his side. He was 87 years old. He was born in Winslow, NJ on March 7, 1927 to William & Elizabeth Stewart. He raised his family in Winslow and moved to Covina California in 1971, and returned to Egg Harbor Twp. ,New Jersey upon his retirement from Jet Propulsion Labs in Pasadena, CA. More recently he resided in Monmouth Beach, NJ. He was a former employee of DuPont de Nemours in both NJ and California for many years, where he worked as a precision sheet metal worker. He was a proud member of the Marines, serving in WWll in the Pacific with the 6th Division, FOX Company, 29th Battalion as a machine gunner. He was 17 years old when he entered the Marine Corps, and fought bravely in the Battle of Okinawa. Along with the rest of his unit, he was awarded the 6th Division Marines Presidential Unit Citation for Outstanding Service during the Battle of Okinawa. He spent a year in China with the Marines liberating the Chinese from Japanese occupation, and was a member of the China Marines Association and the 6th Marine Division Association. He was a lifetime member of the Inskip Antlers Gunning Club, the Winslow Historical Society, and was a former member of the Winslow Volunteer Fire Company. He was pre-deceased by his parents, William J. & Elizabeth Stewart, his loving wife of 56 years, Gloria (nee Bononcini), his brother Lloyd, and his sister Helen (Stewart) Kolesnik. He is survived by his three adoring children, Kathleen (Samuel) Perone , Denise Stewart, and John R. Stewart; 2 grandchildren, William Candelaria & Elizabeth Stewart, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was a role model and inspiration to everyone he met. His love of hunting, good Italian food, lively & intelligent conversation, history, technology, horses and dogs will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him. He was a tremendously good man and a proud Marine to the end. Funeral services have been entrusted to the Carnesale Funeral Home 202 S. Third Street in Hammonton, NJ., where a viewing will be held Sunday, Sept. 14 from 7-9 pm. Final Visitation will be Monday Sept. 15 from 9-10 am at the Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be Celebrated in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish Church of St. Joseph's at 10:30 am on Monday. Burial will be at Our Lady of Victories Cemetery in Landisville, NJ immediately following Mass.
