Gene was a 1969 graduate of Paulsboro High School, Gene's connection with wrestling spanned over 40 years before he retired as Absegami High School's head coach following the 2010 season. Barber achieved success at the high school level as a District 29 Champion and the Outstanding Wrestler Award recipient in that tournament. His teams won four New Jersey State Group IV Championships and Absegami was the No. 1 team in the state in 2002-03-04 and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the country. In successive years from 2001 through 2004, Barber's teams went 22-0, 21-0-1, 23-0 and 23-0. Barber had six South Jersey Group IV Sectional Championships, eight NJSIAA individual state champions, 16 100-win wrestlers, 46 regional champions, and 129 district champions.
