Amelia Lagrotteria Obituary

Amelia Lagrotteria (née DeLosso), 99, longtime resident of Hammonton NJ, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 6, 2025. Amelia exemplified the "Greatest Generation" in every aspect of her long life. She was born in Hammonton NJ on January 21, 1926, the first generation born in America to her Italian immigrant parents Frank and Maria Carmella DeLosso (née Bruno). Her family moved to South Philadelphia during WWII, when she was in her late teens. After graduating from beauty college, she opened a beauty salon in South Philly's 7th Street business district. She managed this profitable business in an era when more than three-quarters of women didn't work outside of the home. The family moved back to her beloved childhood town of Hammonton in the late 1960s. Today her home stands as a unique time capsule of a bygone era, in all its pink-tiled, velvet-draped glory.  Amelia herself may have been a relic of a bygone era, but the comforting traditions she created showcased exactly what her family loved most about her. She was a selfless and loving matriarch who eagerly (over) fed all who came to her door. Her family has fond memories of Sunday dinners where she'd spread out multiple main courses, numerous side dishes and desserts - plus heaping amounts of love. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she spent her happiest days with them. Amelia's drive to serve others persisted to the very end; she never failed to offer visitors whatever she could to make them feel welcomed. "Would you like an ice cream cone?"remained a familiar refrain during her final months (although those who knew her well, also knew this was her very polite way of asking for a frozen cone for herself!)

Amelia is predeceased by her husband Sam. She is survived by her sons Gary Lagrotteria (Jenny) of Williamstown NJ and Sam (Anne Marie) Lagrotteria of Hammonton NJ; her grandchildren Jamie Carpenter née Lagrotteria (Mike) of Winter Garden FL, Sam Lagrotteria(Danielle) of Estell Manor NJ, Francesca Lagrotteria (Morgan) of NYC; Delaney Jones of Maryland and great-grandchildren Alexis Carpenter of Winter Garden FL and Trevor Lagrotteria of Estell Manor NJ, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and beloved friends and neighbors.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Thursday, November 13, 2025 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Our Lady of the Lakes Church, 19 Malaga Road in Collings Lakes, NJ, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, 500 N. White Horse Pike in Hammonton. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
