Obituary of Evelyn Hunter

Evelyn Hunter (nee Jones), 97, of Newtonville, NJ passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. at Virtua Health Systems in Marlton. Born in Sylvester, GA she was a resident of Newtonville for ninety two years. Mrs. Hunter worked for the U.S. Army Electronics Command in Philadelphia from 1942 until 1972. She was a longtime devoted member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Newtonville, where she served as Church Clerk, Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, and on the Deaconess Board and Senior Choir. The church named the women's ministries after her in her honor. Mrs. Hunter was very active and volunteered her time for her community. She was a charter member of A.R.D.C., and the Seniors of the Newtonville area, she helped organize the Martin Luther King Center, and she was a volunteer Supervisor for the Newtonville Day Care Center. Mrs. Hunter was recognized by the State of New Jersey and the Buena Vista Township for all her volunteer efforts. Mrs. Hunter was predeceased by her husbands, Paul E. Whiting Sr. and James T. Hunter, and her daughter, Valeria K. Battle. She is survived by her children, Dr. Bertha F. Henson, Paul E. Whiting Jr. (Gloria), Reginald H. Whiting (Claudette), Lorraine Spivey (Kirby Jr.), and Portia Deal; two nephews, Earle Jones (Linda Eatmon), and Andre Jones; two nieces, Sylvia Turrell and Wilhemina Jones; one step-daughter, Asma Abdulmalik aka "Betty". Also twenty nine grandchildren, fifty nine great grandchildren and thirteen great great grandchildren, one grand-niece, Sylvia Delevoye (Laurent), and three great grand-nephews. A viewing will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014 from 9:30AM - 11:00 AM at the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 468 Ninth Street, Newtonville, NJ, where funeral services will take place at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 468 Ninth Street, P.O. Box 95, Newtonville, NJ 08346. Arrangements by the Carnesale Funeral Home in Hammonton.
